A modern refurbishment of a house within a conservation area.
The owners of this 1990s chalet bungalow had seen our work on neighbouring homes within the same conservation area and approached us to help reimagine their dated property. Their goal was to transform a dated house into a modern family home with renewed identity and charm. Although the building itself felt tired, its secluded plot offered the ideal setting for a bold, contemporary retrofit.
The project is currently underway, and Sharpe Architecture has led it from initial feasibility through to technical design. We developed and tested several masterplan options for the entire house, structuring the scheme into phases so the first-floor works could be delivered independently and ahead of the ground-floor alterations. Through this process, we arrived at the most efficient solution: a full-width first-floor extension that provides the space and flexibility needed for the wider transformation
The full-width dormer extension is confidently contemporary, transforming the home’s appearance through the use of high-quality materials and refined, crisp detailing. Internally, all bedrooms have been enlarged and rebalanced to create more comfortable proportions. The addition of a generous new master suite—with its own en-suite and dressing area—significantly enhances the first-floor experience.
At ground level, strategic layout changes will increase the size and functionality of key family spaces, while introducing essential service areas such as a utility room and boot room to better support everyday, country living.
The new first floor will significantly improve the bedroom spaces, offering more generous proportions and enhanced amenities for the family. The dormer extension and redesigned roofscape will transform the appearance of the house, introducing a stronger architectural character and a cohesive, contemporary identity.
