A low-cost, timber‑framed extension that adds a garden bedroom with charm and character.

The clients wanted to create an extra bedroom at the rear of their home, but without a hefty construction cost. As the property sits in a conservation area, they also needed a design that would be sensitive to its surroundings. Sustainability was important to them too — they wanted something economical, efficient, and eco-friendly.

We handled the project from early ideas through to delivery, designing a low-cost but well-crafted solution, navigating planning constraints, and managing the construction process to make sure it stayed within budget and the quality stayed high.

We used a timber frame to keep the build cost-effective, light, and efficient, and wrapped the form in batten cladding to give the extension a dynamic shape while still respecting neighbouring rights to light. Yellow bi-fold doors add a playful touch and open directly onto the garden, making the new room feel both connected and accessible.

The house now has an extra, well-proportioned bedroom without compromising on quality or budget. The batten cladding gives the extension its distinct, modern form, yet it still feels respectful to its surroundings. The bi-fold doors create a smooth connection between the interior and garden, letting in light and air, and making the space feel more integrated.

We are so happy we approached Sharpe Architecture for this project and would recommend their services to anyone. Frances was very attentive to all our needs, wants and every detail throughout the project. The design is beautiful and far exceeded what we thought was possible.
