A ground-floor transformation that brings light, space, and flow to an Edwardian townhouse.

The clients wanted to make their ground floor work better for their busy family life. The original layout had a dark, cramped kitchen at the rear, and the utility and WC were tucked in awkwardly. There was little connection to the garden, and the space didn’t feel welcoming or practical for daily living.

Sharpe Architecture carried out a feasibility study for an open-plan kitchen/diner with a utility space. After developing the preferred option and securing planning permission, we prepared a full technical design package for selected contractors to price from.

The kitchen was moved to the garden-side of the ground floor, with the utility and WC relocated to the back, which created a more open and light-filled family space. A large glazed partition now brings natural light deep into the home and visually connects the kitchen with the garden room. A large slot window at worktop level adds daylight deep into the plan. Throughout, a calm, Scandi-inspired natural material palette keep the space warm, practical, and inviting.

The ground floor now feels open, bright, and easy to move through. The kitchen and garden room feel connected, creating a more sociable and flexible space for the family. Small details, like the slot window and Crittal-style steel framed glazing, add character without overwhelming the design.
